      Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street.         This photograph, which appeared in the album JAPAN THROUGH THE STEREOSCOPE published by Underwood & Underwood, was taken sometime between 1887 and 1907. The caption on the back reads: Girl sleeping between wadded futons with head on a wooden support - Teahouse, Hikone.           The half-naked woman on the left seems to be a nursemaid. Foreign visitors to Japan at the end of the Edo Period were surprised to see Japanese women going about half-naked in public.               Balcony of the main hall of Kiyomizu Temple seen from Okuno-in, facing west-northwest. Among the sightseers there are women with parasols. It is probably the beginning of summer because the trees are lush with leaves. The terrace was renovated in 1633. The building is in the yosemune style, and the roof is made entirely of hinoki tree bark. Wings flank the west side and the east and west of the south side.
