Although similar to photograph #2414, this photograph shows a well in front of the bell tower, and Benten Pond has disappeared. Since the pond was filled in on June 30, 1886, this photograph must have been taken after that date. The inscription C25 from the negative in the lower right indicates that this is a photograph sold by A. Farsari & Co.             The Nio Gate of Kiyomizu Temple. There are stone lanterns on both the north and the south sides of the stone stairway in front of the gate. The west gate and the three-story pagoda are visible on the far right. Built during the Muromachi Era (1392-1573), the Nio Gate had three rooms and one door with a hiwadabuki (bark-covered) roof. The statue of Kongo Rikishi is situated in the area surrounded by a kongo fence (a fence made of vertical stakes with decoratively shaped finials resembling the ritual object called kongosho used in esoteric Buddhist rites) with lattice work above it. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide. The photograph must have been taken before 1908, when the fence on the fifth story was removed during major repair work. The houses around the pagoda are brothels, and the area is currently called Tatsumi-Shinchi.                     The Great Buddha built at Shinkoji Temple in September 1760. The bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha is located in front of the temple, facing east, and measures about 4.8 meters in height. It was made by Hasegawa Kuzaemon of Osaka. The bell tower, rebuilt in 1772, is behind the statue, and the main hall constructed in 1730 is visible to the far left.
