The Hiramatsu Villa was located at a corner of Dogashima Spa. Jinshiro Hiramatsu was a banker in Tokyo. He did not quite enjoy the cohlera epidemic in Tokyo in 1886. Consequently, he bought the site of old Naraya Hotel in Dogashima Spa. Pulling water from Shirabe Waterfall, he made a beautiful garden and built a houe with a teahouse and study surrounding it.     The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

    Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple.       The residence of Okuma Shigenobu

      A scroll is hanging in the alcove, and a large vase has been placed in front. When Okuma Shigenobu died in 1922, his house and garden were donated to Waseda University in accordance with his will. The garden is about 33,960 square metres in area. Okuma Hall is now located on the site of the house. The Rihga Royal Hotel Waseda was opened in the northern part of the garden in 1994.         The Tamadare Falls

        Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.           The residence of Okuma Shigenobu

          The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005.             This is the view from the present-day Iriuda in Odawara City and Yamasaki in Hakone-machi when facing Yumoto. The road is Tokaido Highway (present-day National Route 1) and a cart, rickshaw, and pails are visible. Three children, possibly brothers and sister, are standing. The telegraph pole is on the right.               This is the view from Shin-machi of the post town of Hakone when facing Hakone checkpoint. The mountain behind is Komagadake. The street where the palanquin men are is Tokaido Highway (present-day National Route 1). The house on the right is facing toward southwest and a child and an old man are enjoying the sun. Judging from their clothes, it appears to be either late autumn or early spring.
