Enoshima Island and Benten Bridge

Taken by Kozaburo Tamamura (1856-?). Same as #2148. The first time the bridge appeared in a photograph was the article in Japan Day by Day by E. S. Morse (1838-1925), who spent a summer here. An American zoologist, Morse is known for his discovery of the ancient shell site at Ohmori.     The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

    Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple.       This photo captures Matsushima Beach as seen from Kyogashima Island. The Kanrantei Teahouse in the Momohama Period (late 16th century) architecture style, a Designated Cultural Asset of Miyagi Prefecture, is visible in the distance, just to the left side of the island. The boat is a chabune with full sail.         A cargo boat on the Nihonbashi River

        View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.           Nunobiki Falls

          Medaki waterfall at Nunobiki Falls, taken around the same time as photographs #2814 and 2827 (Medaki Waterfall of Nunobiki). The presence of the wooden bridge over the river and the teahouse and the absence of a water supply pump suggest that this was taken on the mid-Meiji Period.               View of the outer moat of Edo Castle looking south from the eastern edge of Tokiwa Bridge, with Gofuku Bridge in the distance to the south. The Gofuku-bashi Gomon Gate was removed in 1873, and the wooden bridge was replaced with a stone bridge in 1880. This photograph was therefore taken after 1880. The break in the middle of the stone wall on the right is the junction of the Dosan Moat and the outer moat.                 Northeastern view of the snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji, taken from the bank of Fuji River in Iwabuchi, Fujikawa-machi. The mountain on the left is Mt. Iwamoto, and the tree line reaches to the forest of Matsuoka Sui Shinto Shrine (Fuji City) on the left. Two men are at the riverside, and Fujigawa Bridge, which crosses from the south of the shrine to Iwabuchi, is visible. This bridge was washed away many times from the beginning of the Meiji Period. The left panel captures the entire view of Dejima, Shin-ohashi Bridge, Shinchi and Umegasaki, the centre panel the area from Umegasaki to Minamiyamate, the Russian Consulate and the central part of the foreign settlement, and the right panel the area from the central part of the foreign settlement to Furukawa-machi. Also, the construction of the new Urakami Road along the waterfront from Dejima to Goto-machi has not been completed yet. A cannon platform is visible near the edge of the pine tree.
