The Golden Pavilion at Rokuonji Temple seen from the western edge of Kyoko Pond, facing east. The rock in the centre of the pond is Kameyama Rock. In the back is the huge roof of the kuri (the residence of the priests), visible through the shrubbery. The shrubbery on the right is Ashihara Island; the one on the left is Dejima. The temple was built in 1398 but destroyed by arson in 1950.         This is the Ryukoji main hall completed in 1832, a wooden building roughly 22 metres wide and 27 metres deep. The official name of the temple is Jakkozan Ryukoji. Both the lanterns at the bottom of the stairs and the washing place on the right exist today. Shichimendo is visible above the stairs on the left. It was built in the early Edo Period to enshrine Shichimen Daimyojin of Mt. Minobe-Shichimen-zan.               This is the head temple of the Jishu sect of Buddhism founded by Ippen. The official name of the temple is Totakusan Muryokoin Shojokoji Temple. The fourth-generation priest Donkai built the temple in 1325. This photograph captures Kyakuden (far left) and Daishoin (far right) over the Chujaku Gate viewed from around Kan'nondo on the left.                 Balcony of the main hall of Kiyomizu Temple seen from Okuno-in, facing west-northwest. Among the sightseers there are women with parasols. It is probably the beginning of summer because the trees are lush with leaves. The terrace was renovated in 1633. The building is in the yosemune style, and the roof is made entirely of hinoki tree bark. Wings flank the west side and the east and west of the south side.                   The Nio Gate of Kiyomizu Temple. There are stone lanterns on both the north and the south sides of the stone stairway in front of the gate. The west gate and the three-story pagoda are visible on the far right. Built during the Muromachi Era (1392-1573), the Nio Gate had three rooms and one door with a hiwadabuki (bark-covered) roof. The statue of Kongo Rikishi is situated in the area surrounded by a kongo fence (a fence made of vertical stakes with decoratively shaped finials resembling the ritual object called kongosho used in esoteric Buddhist rites) with lattice work above it.
