Karasaki-no-Matsu, the pine tree of Karasaki, famous for its portrayal in the ukiyoe print Karasaki-no-Yau (Night Rain of Karasaki), one of the Eight Scenes of Oumi. The tree in the photograph is the second-generation pine with an east-west width of 72 meters, a north-south width of 86 meters and a height of 10 meters. A number of splints and stone walls support the branches stretching out to the lake. It is probably the beginning of summer because the trees are lush with leaves. The terrace was renovated in 1633. The building is in the yosemune style, and the roof is made entirely of hinoki tree bark. Wings flank the west side and the east and west of the south side.                   The five-story pagoda of Hokanji Temple is viewed from a path stretching southeast, facing northwest. The pagoda, also called Yasaka Tower, was built in 1440 by Ashikaga Yoshinori and underwent major repair work in 1618. Featuring a tiled roof, it is 40m tall and 5.5m wide. The photograph must have been taken before 1908, when the fence on the fifth story was removed during major repair work.                       This is a Shingon Sect temple established by Kukai (Kobo Taishi) in 824. The sanmon and main hall are in the foreground and background, respectively. The large tree on the left is the upside-down gingko, which is still the largest gingko tree in Tokyo. This spot became the site of the American Legation after the effectuation of the Japan-U.S. Commercial Treaty in June 1859. Townsend Harris was the first envoy. The Legation moved to Tsukiji Akashi-machi in 1875. This photograph was taken in 1863 by Felix Beato, soon after Harris' arrival in Japan.
