      The big bell of Chion-in Temple is seen from the west side of the bell tower. Men and women in kimono are looking at the bell over the iron fence. Also called Yoshimizu's Bell, this is the largest bronze bell in Japan and was cast at Sanjo-Kamanza foundry in 1636. It is 5.4m high, 2.7m in diameter, 29cm thick, and weighs 7.5 tons.         The Great Buddha built at Shinkoji Temple in September 1760. The bronze statue of Vairocana Buddha is located in front of the temple, facing east, and measures about 4.8 meters in height. It was made by Hasegawa Kuzaemon of Osaka. The bell tower, rebuilt in 1772, is behind the statue, and the main hall constructed in 1730 is visible to the far left.               The big bell of Hokoji Temple placed on the stone blocks is viewed from the south. Two men in kimono are holding the bell. The big bell was made at the time of the reconstruction of the temple by Toyotomi Hideyori in 1614.                   Two bronze lotus petals (four existing today) are visible on the front of the pedestal, and a simple building stands on the right. There are large flat stones in front of the lotus petals to both the left and right. The fact that the petals are intact and the accompanying structure is different indicates that this photograph was taken later than the beginning of the Meiji Period when photograph #4464 was apparently taken.
