      The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.           These wisteria terraces were all destroyed during World War II air raids. The wisteria trees of today were planted one by one from around 1950 by the local people. The wisteria blossoms at Kameido Tenjin Shrine are said to be the best in Tokyo, and they were chosen as one of the New Best One Hundred Scenes of Tokyo. The five girls in hakama trousers are perhaps praying to pass a school examination. Three bridges span Shinji Pond: Taiko-bashi, Hira-bashi, and Taiko-bashi. They are said to represent the past, present, and future.               An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G. It is said that this pine was planted by Yoshimitsu Ashikaga. The branches were formed to look like a boat. On the left is the ohjoin (large study), and the roof of the kuri is visible on the right.                   The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                       The area across Sumida River from Asakusa is Mukojima. There is no official boundary, but area from Mokuboji Temple to Makura Bridge is referred to as Mukojima. The banks of Sumida River at Mukojima are called Sumida-tei or Boku-tei. Cherry trees were planted here during the Kyoho Period (1716-36) by the 8th Shogun Tokugawa Yoshimune, and saplings were planted from time to time thereafter. This area thus became the most popular place to enjoy cherry blossoms in Edo.
