Japan's largest torii completed in Wakayama

SHINGU, Japan - Japan's largest ''torii,'' a gateway at the entrance to a Shinto shrine, is completed in a ceremony at Kumano-Hongu Shrine in Hongu, Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, on May 11. Some 500 people passed through the 34-meter-high, 42-meter-wide gate after the ceremony.

The temple is actually Tozenji, located in present-day Takanawa 3-chome. The Shogunate concluded a treaty pact with Great Britain (Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Commerce) in 1858, and Tozenji Temple was designated as the site of the British Legation. This was taken by Swiss Pierre Rossier at the end of the Edo Period. A cargo boat on the Nihonbashi River

View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods. Torii gates at Fushimi Shrine

The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G. The red Grand Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Important Cultural Asset) is recognized around the world as a symbol of Japan. The current gate, the eighth built since the Heian Period, was completed in 1875. It is approximately 16m tall, and the horizontal part, called 'kasagi,' is approximately 24m long. The posts are made from camphor logs. The Kamaguchi-bashi,a suspension bridge over the Fuji River

View, facing south, of the suspension bridge over Kamaguchi Gorge (a rugged section of Fuji River) between Naganuki in Shibakawa-cho and Setojima. The rapid flow of Fuji River makes bridges difficult to maintain. During the Edo Period, this was the only bridge over the river. Both banks are cliffs, and the width of the river is at its narrowest here. Several people are on the bridge, which is made of wisteria vines and planks. The village of Ozaki and Mt.
