The cooks and waitresses are intentionally posing for this photograph believed to have been taken by Usui Shuzaburo, an apprentice to Shimooka Renjo. Ogiya Restaurant was also known for its expertise in cooking. Take-out Kamayaki Tamago (Pan Baked Egg Omelet) gained special popularity. This dish is famous to this day. The residence of Okuma Shigenobu

The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005. A teahouse at Oji

The building on the right is Ogiya Restaurant. A garden is on the left side of Otonashi River. According to the restaurant brochure, the history of the establishment goes back to 1648 when Yazaemon started a simple tea stand on the street. That was the time of the 3rd Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu. Hayafune Takehiko is currently the 14th generation owner. The modern building is a five-story concrete structure, with Ogiya Restaurant on the second floor. The gates still remain at the first floor entrance. Teahouses along the Koshu Road

The bank of Katsura River, which separated the feudal domains of Sagami and Kai along the old Koshu Highway (present-day Uenohara-machi in southeastern Yamanashi Prefecture), seen from the east side (Sagami side) of the river. The buildings are teahouses standing along the highway, the existence of which is reported in travel journals as early as the Tenpo Period (1830-44). The mountain station Suwa-no-Sekisho (Kuchidome Bansho) is up the slope on the right. Mt. Fukiage Park,the Imperial Palace

The residences of feudal lords were formerly located here as protection on the west side of Edo Castle. However, the area was converted to a garden after the great fire of the Meireki Period in 1657. The garden was designed in exact detail, right down to the location of each stone and tree. There were apparently two waterfalls in the garden, one at the southern edge of Oike (Great Pond) in the centre of the garden and the other near Takimi Teahouse. Yokohama Post Office

The building across Honcho Dori is the Yokohama Post Office built in 1875 (presently part of the Prefectural Office grounds). The building next door is the Telegraph Station built in 1872. Since both were reconstructed in brick in the third decade of the Meiji Period, this photograph must have been taken prior to that time. Nunobiki Falls

This is Medaki Waterfall of Nunobiki. This photograph is assumed to have been taken in Mid-Meiji Period around the same time as the photograph #2827 and #4240, as the wooden bridge which surrounds the river and the teahouse were already built. As the caption at the lower right says '1208. The area between Isezaki-cho and Nigiwai-cho, which prospered from the second decade of the Meiji Period, had many theatres, teahouses and restaurants. A five-story pagoda,Asakusa

The five-story pagoda viewed from Benten Pond. The original is said to have been built by Awanokami Taira-no-Kinmasa in 942. The pagoda in this photograph was rebuilt in 1648 and designated a National Treasure in 1911, but it burned to the ground during 1945 air raids (together with the sutra depository). The garden of Ogiya Restaurant is on the left. The water is flowing through grooves in the rocks apparently made by long exposure. Felice Beato took a similar photograph of the garden at the beginning of the Meiji Period and added the caption: Stream with a rushing waterfall. Also, a similar photograph was published in an 1872 issue of The Far East entitled, Waterfall at O-jee from the Tea-House Garden.
