A five-story pagoda,Asakusa

The five-story pagoda viewed from Benten Pond. The original is said to have been built by Awanokami Taira-no-Kinmasa in 942. The pagoda in this photograph was rebuilt in 1648 and designated a National Treasure in 1911, but it burned to the ground during 1945 air raids (together with the sutra depository). The present day five-story pagoda was erected in 1973. This photograph was taken in the second decade of the Meiji Period (1877-1887), probably by Stillfried.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:R.
