Rokuharamitsuji Temple

The Karamon Gate of Rokuson-o Shinto Shrine is seen facing east from the northeastern side of the Shinryu Pond. This shrine was rebuilt by Nankokushonin of Henjoshinin with the help of the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1702 and completed in 1707. It enshrines Rokuson-o (Minamoto Tsunemoto, a descendent of the Genji clan. Photograph of Indian medical orderlies assisting with wounded from the Battle of the Admin Box, February 1944. Part of a collection of official photographs from Middle and Far East, World War Two (1939-1945). Collected by Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) Sir Frank Walter Messervy. The Battle of the Admin Box took place on the Southern Front of the Burma theatre in February 1944. The 5th and 7th Indian Divisions suffered over 7900 casualties, but successfully resisted Japanese attacks for the first time in the campaign. In doing so they pioneered methods which would lead to further Allied victories over the following year. Date: 1944

Female pilgrims climb the stone steps to Kondo Hall at Nin'naji Temple. The photograph was taken facing east from the eastern approach to Kan'nondo Hall. The women wear zori slippers, hold long walking sticks, and carry something on their backs. The irimoya-style building in the rear may be a place for drinking water. Shinkyo Bridge,the Daiyagawa River

Shinkyo Bridge spans Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko-Sannai. The bridge is also called Jabashi (Snake Bridge), referring to the legend that the priest Shodoshonin, when founding Nikko, crossed the river by walking over two big snakes released by Shinja-Daio. The bridge in this photograph was washed away by a flood in 1902. Kameido Shrine

View of the Romon Gate from Taiko-bashi (Drum Bridge) located just through the torii gate at the entrance of the shrine. The five girls in hakama trousers are perhaps praying to pass a school examination. Three bridges span Shinji Pond: Taiko-bashi, Hira-bashi, and Taiko-bashi. They are said to represent the past, present, and future. The caldera area of Aso has been used to grow rice since the Yayoi Period. According to myth, the deity of the volcano, Takeiwawatatsunomikoto, built the first rice paddy here. The photograph captures the Asodani area with the central crater located on the north side of Aso Gogaku (the five mountains of Aso) as viewed from the east. The area is commonly referred to as Aso no Senmaida ( Thousand fields of Aso ) with many narrow rice paddies one after another.
