The Great Buddha at Shinkoji Temple in the mid-Meiji Period. Like #2821 (Entrance to Mt. Nunobiki), #4893 (Entrance to Mt. Nunobiki) and #2814 (Nunobiki Medaki), this photograph was taken and sold by the Yokohama photographer Kusakabe Kinbei.     OSAKA, Japan - Chief priest Keijo Sogahara looks at a recovered Buddha statue at Kogen temple in the village of Asuka, Nara Prefecture, on Sept. 24, 2010. The statue, estimated to have been made between the late 7th century and the first half of the 8th century, was discovered in the catalogue of an auction company in Kyoto 36 years after it was stolen.

      Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple. Behind them are the two stones presumed to be foundations of the former Great Buddha building.           A senior geisha serves a meal to younger geishas who are sitting in front of the alcove, traditionally the seat reserved for a guest or older people. The subtitle reads The Correct Serving of a Japanese Meal. This is obviously a staged photograph for foreigners.             The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a seated Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai) made of bronze. Designated as a National Treasure in 1897, it is the main object of worship at Kohtokuin Shojosenji Temple. Historic documents state that work began on a gilt statue of Shaka Nyorai Buddha about 13.5 meters in height in the year 1252. It is not known when it became a statue of Amida Buddha.               Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street.                 Buddhist statues on the Sanmon Gate of Chion-in Temple. The Buddha is seated in the middle, flanked by Zenzai-doji, Shudatsu-choja, and the 16 Buddhist Saints. Unryu (dragons in clouds) and other motifs are painted on the ceiling. This is the largest gate of its kind in Japan, with five bays and three entrances.
