The hill on the left is Ujinoyama, the area from present-day Nakayamate Dori 6- and 7-chome to Yamamoto Dori 5-chome in Chuo Ward, probably taken sometime in the first half of the Meiji Period. Although part of a mixed-residence area outside the foreign settlement, this section to the west contained some Western-style buildings.     The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005. The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground.         Farm houses existed in Miyagino in the Meiji era in Ko, Kami, Sotokubo and Azuma, but since flat land was scarce in Ko and Kami, this photo is thought to be Sotokubo or Azuma (perhaps near the present Jonai Senior High School branch school) from the background.             The Shimabara-han Fief Second Residence

            This location is the present day Tsunazaka slope at Mita 2-chome. The house on the right was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Hizen(present day Nagasaki Prefecture) Shimabara-han fief, the house on the right going up the slope was the residence of the Matsudairas of the Iyo(present day Ehime Prefecture) Matsuyama-han fief, and the one on the left was the second residence of the Matsudairas of Mutsu(present day Aomori and part of Iwate Prefectures). Right now there stands Keio University at the bottom of the slope and the Italian Embassy on top of the slope. The site of the residences of Satohara-han and Matsuyama-han belongs to the Mitsui Club in Tsuna-machi.                     The twelve-level Ryounkaku,Asakusa

                    While Rokumeikan, built around the same time, is a representative building of the nobility, Ryounkaku was a building for the common people. At a time when tall buildings were all but nonexistent in Tokyo, it was one of the few portrayed by photographers in vertical composition. This photograph provides a rare view of Ryounkaku reflected in Oike Pond. The top half of Ryounkaku was destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1923 and the rest of the building was later demolished.
