The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground. Located at the foot of the hill, Motomachi was created when displaced residents of the old Yokohama Village moved here after the opening of the port.           This photo is taken halfway up the Oura River looking downstream. The street light was particular to the foreign settlement. The bridge downstream is Benten Bridge and the mountain on the other side of Nagasaki Port is Mt. Inasa. A boat called ‘sanpan’, used to fetch goods from the ships offshore, is moored. The area, ‘Sagarimatsu’, was named after the pine tree on the left. The roof of Myogyoji Temple is barely discernable. The big western style building on the right is the Belle Vue Hotel, the first large size hotel in the foreign settlement. In the foreground is the fence by the slope to Oura Church. Approximately 9 meters were added to the Oura Bund in 1864. The first customs office building can be seen at the foot of the protruding embankment in front of the Umegasaki Customs House.               This photo captures the area around the Oura River as viewed from mid-hill Mt. Donnoyama. At the mouth of the river stands Sagarimatsu Bridge, built in 1869 for the horse trail in the settlement. A bit upstream stands Benten Bridge built during the Bunkyu period (1861-1864) when the land was reclaimed for the Oura settlement. The U-shaped building visible next to Myogyoji Temple on the left hill is the Belle Vue Hotel. On the other side of the port is the Nagasaki Shipyard controlled by the Ministry of Engineering.                 Hikone Castle, the brainchild of Ii Naokatsu, reached completion in 1622 after about twenty years of work. The pine trees on the right are Iroha Matsu. The building in the foreground is the Sawaguchi tamon watchtower and just behind it is the Tenbin watchtower. On the top of the hill is the castle tower.
