    The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a seated Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai) made of bronze. Designated as a National Treasure in 1897, it is the main object of worship at Kohtokuin Shojosenji Temple. Historic documents state that work began on a gilt statue of Shaka Nyorai Buddha about 13.5 meters in height in the year 1252. It is not known when it became a statue of Amida Buddha.         The Rokudo Jizo are typical examples of stone Buddhist statues in Hakone together with the Magai botoke of Nijugobosatsu. It was carved on a rock facing Shojin Lake at the foot of the Mt. Kamifutagoyama, and has a height of over 4 meters. It was completed in 1300, and the Buddhist ceremony to consecrate a newly made image was conducted by Ryokan Boninjo.           The half-naked woman on the left seems to be a nursemaid. Foreign visitors to Japan at the end of the Edo Period were surprised to see Japanese women going about half-naked in public. This custom apparently continued into the Meiji Period. This may be a souvenir photograph depicting the custom of Japanese nursing at the time. Because the Odaki and Medaki waterfalls have the appearance of stretched cloth, people started to call them the waterfalls of Nunobiki (pulled cloth). The Nunobiki Amusement Park was built by a private company in 1872, and the area was subsequently developed for entertainment purposes.                   While Rokumeikan, built around the same time, is a representative building of the nobility, Ryounkaku was a building for the common people. At a time when tall buildings were all but nonexistent in Tokyo, it was one of the few portrayed by photographers in vertical composition. This photograph provides a rare view of Ryounkaku reflected in Oike Pond. The top half of Ryounkaku was destroyed in the Great Earthquake of 1923 and the rest of the building was later demolished. On the right, the Great Buddha still has its halo.                       The residences of feudal lords were formerly located here as protection on the west side of Edo Castle. However, the area was converted to a garden after the great fire of the Meireki Period in 1657. The garden was designed in exact detail, right down to the location of each stone and tree. There were apparently two waterfalls in the garden, one at the southern edge of Oike (Great Pond) in the centre of the garden and the other near Takimi Teahouse.
