'Feather' men dance at spring festival in Gifu

NAGOYA, Japan - A group of men with four-meter-high bamboo ''feathers'' strapped to their backs dance with drums during a festival at Tanigumisankegon Temple in the town of Ibigawa, Gifu Prefecture, on Feb. 18. The dancers swung from side to side and twirled to the music, fanning tourists with the ''feathers'' in the festival to mark the start of spring.

The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Part of a collection of official photographs from Middle and Far East, World War Two (1939-1945). Collected by Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) Sir Frank Walter Messervy. The Battle of the Admin Box took place on the Southern Front of the Burma theatre in February 1944. The 5th and 7th Indian Divisions suffered over 7900 casualties, but successfully resisted Japanese attacks for the first time in the campaign. In doing so they pioneered methods which would lead to further Allied victories over the following year. Date: 1944

Japan - Yokohama - The Grand Pier. The HMS Rawalpindi (left) was a British armed merchant cruiser (a converted passenger ship - as it was at the time of this photograph - as the P&O vessel the SS Rawalpindi) that was sunk in a surface action against the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during the first months of Second World War. On the right is the Hikawa Maru - a Japanese ocean liner that was built for the Nippon Yusen KK line by the Yokohama Dock Company. She was launched on 30 September 1929, and made her maiden voyage from Kobe to Seattle on 13 May 1930. Date: circa 1931
