The hundred steps of Motomachi and Maeda-bashi Bridge,Yokohama

The stone steps visible in the centre are the Motomachi Hyakudan ( one hundred steps ). Sengen Shinto Shrine stands at the top of the stairs, with the border of Motomachi 2-chome and 3-chome at the bottom. The bridge in the foreground is Maedabashi, built when Horikawa Waterway was dug in 1860.               Female pilgrims climb the stone steps to Kondo Hall at Nin'naji Temple. The photograph was taken facing east from the eastern approach to Kan'nondo Hall. The women wear zori slippers, hold long walking sticks, and carry something on their backs. The irimoya-style building in the rear may be a place for drinking water. They are said to represent the past, present, and future.                     The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                       This is a stereograph of the stone steps leading to the Okusha (inner shrine) containing the tomb of Tokugawa Ieyasu. Visitors reach these steps after passing under the famous Nemurineko (sleeping cat) carving in the east corridor of the main hall at Nikko Toshogu and going through Sakashita Gate.
