A row of pine trees along the Tokaido Road

This two-kilometer stretch of red pine trees still exists at Kasatori Pass. This photograph was taken between 1887 and 1896. It shows how the highway had been upgraded from its state in the Edo Period to allow carriages, carts, and rickshaws to pass. Today, the number of the pine trees has decreased. However, 106 huge red pine trees of 150 to 300 years old remain.==Date:unknown, Place:Nagano, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number64‐49‐0]
