                  The red Grand Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Important Cultural Asset) is recognized around the world as a symbol of Japan. The current gate, the eighth built since the Heian Period, was completed in 1875. It is approximately 16m tall, and the horizontal part, called 'kasagi,' is approximately 24m long. The posts are made from camphor logs.                     The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                       This Kannon-do was rebuilt by the third shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu in 1649. The style of construction is koran mitesaki-zukuri. The photograph captures a flock of pigeons flying from Niomon (gate). The building burned down in an air raid on March 10, 1945. The present-day Kannon-do was erected on October 17, 1958.
