Northern view of Mt. Fuji from the mouth of Tagonoura (formerly Yoshiwara Minato) harbour in Fuji City. The reinforcements to the girders of Tagonoura Bridge (built in 1873) indicate that this photograph was taken after photograph #3146. Also, because the stone gate to block the back flow is missing in the inner part of the harbour, this photograph must have been taken before 1886.     The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple,the British Legation

    Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy. The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident). Bullet holes and sword marks still remain in the study and the entrance of the temple.       Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street.         View of the Romon Gate from Taiko-bashi (Drum Bridge) located just through the torii gate at the entrance of the shrine. The five girls in hakama trousers are perhaps praying to pass a school examination. Three bridges span Shinji Pond: Taiko-bashi, Hira-bashi, and Taiko-bashi. They are said to represent the past, present, and future.               This is Kagami-ike (Mirror Pond) located at the southeast of Chumon Gate of Todaiji Temple. Since Mt. Wakakusa is visible afar, this is the view from the Nanboku (lit. South-North) approach to the temple when facing southeast. The stairs at west of Nakashima Island and a torii gate are present.
