Nishinomaru Ote Bridge and Nishinomaru Shimojo Bridge seen from Nishinomaru Shita (present-day Imperial Palace Outer Garden). Nishinomaru Shimojo Bridge featured rare two-stage girders because of a deep moat. Thus, it was called Niju-bashi (double level bridge). The gate on the left is Nishinomaru Ote-mon. The gate on the right is Nishinomaru Shoinmae-mon. Next to it are Jurokken Tamon and Fushimi watchtower.       The red painted Shinkyo Bridge build over River Daiya is located at the entrance of Nikko Shaji. There were joints, as seen to the left, on the bridge girders of Kami Bridge before it was destroyed in the floods of 1902. The present Kami Bridge has no joints.           Kakumon Bridge spanning the inner moat (Nijubashi Moat) is said to have been built during the Kansei Period (1789-1801). During the Edo and Meiji Periods, the bridge in the foreground was called Nishinomaru Ote-bashi and the one behind it Nishinomaru Shimojo-bashi. The names currently used by the Imperial House Agency are Imperial Palace Main Gate Stone Bridge and Imperial Palace Main Gate Iron Bridge, respectively. Since 1948, commoners have been allowed to cross these bridges on January 2 and on the Emperor's birthday.               This is a scene of the Sakurababa and Irabayashi neighbourhoods near the fork of Nakashima River and Narutaki River (present-day Nakanohashi bridge). This scenery was given the poetic name Sakuraba Seiran (cherry blossom storm) and was known as one of the eight best scenes of Nagasaki.                 The sanmon (front gate) at Sensoji Temple was called Niomon because statues of the guardian deities Kongo Rikishi were installed on both the right and left (present-day Hozomon). Statues of Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri Bodhisattva) and Shiten (four angels) are installed on the second floor of the gate building. The plaque Sensoji is based on calligraphy by the head priest of the Tendai Sect, Ryosho Hoshin-o.                       Shinbashi Street of the Higashiyama district of Kyoto City. Chionin is the head temple of the Jodo Sect which was initiated by Honen Jonin of Yoshimizu Zenbo (temple of the Zen sect). The gate is the largest Sakura Gate in Japan, built by Tokugawa Hidetada. The construction was started in 1619 and completed two years later.
