This gate was called Niomon because statues of the Nio guardian deities were placed there until 1871, when Shinto and Buddhism were officially separated and the statues were transferred to Taiyuin Mausoleum. The World Heritage Committee is due to meet in Marrakesh, Morocco, for six days from Nov. 29.

The legation was attacked on May 28th, 1861by Mito Clan samurai demanding the expulsion of foreigners, and several people were killed or injured (Tozenji Incident).                       An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.
