    Tozenji Temple became the site of the British Legation in 1859 and Sir Rutherford Alcock was the first envoy.         Shinkyo Bridge spans Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko-Sannai. The bridge is also called Jabashi (Snake Bridge), referring to the legend that the priest Shodoshonin, when founding Nikko, crossed the river by walking over two big snakes released by Shinja-Daio. The bridge in this photograph was washed away by a flood in 1902.             The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a seated Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai) made of bronze. Designated as a National Treasure in 1897, it is the main object of worship at Kohtokuin Shojosenji Temple. Historic documents state that work began on a gilt statue of Shaka Nyorai Buddha about 13.5 meters in height in the year 1252. It is not known when it became a statue of Amida Buddha.               Like photograph #2276, this is a northern view from the entrance of Nakamise, the present location of Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate). The shopping area between Kaminarimon and Niomon is called Nakamise. Legend has it that the priests of Sensoji Temple asked the local people to keep the temple grounds clean and in return gave them permission to set up shops there. Buildings of brick construction were erected in 1885 in imitation of the Ginza Street. The five girls in hakama trousers are perhaps praying to pass a school examination. Three bridges span Shinji Pond: Taiko-bashi, Hira-bashi, and Taiko-bashi. They are said to represent the past, present, and future.
