Motomiya Garden,Hikone

Genkyu-en is the garden at the former second residence of the Ii family in the San-no-maru section of Hikone Castle. It was completed by the 4th feudal lord of the Oumi Domain, Ii Naooki, in 1679. The name is derived from the villa of Chinese Emperor Xuanzong (685-763) of the Tang Dynasty. The Rinchi-kaku and other buildings are carefully positioned around the pond with trees and unusual stones.     The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005.       The Golden Pavilion at Rokuon-ji Temple seen from the eastern edge of Kyoko Pond, facing west-northwest. The rock on the left is Hosokawa-ishi, and Ashihara Island is visible behind. The temple was built in 1398 but destroyed by arson in 1950. Unlike the reconstructed building of today, the original roof was supported by many columns at each level. Water weeds fill the surface of the pond. Pine forest surrounds the area. The background is unclear due to the poor colouration.               Balcony of the main hall of Kiyomizu Temple seen from Okuno-in, facing west-northwest. Among the sightseers there are women with parasols. It is probably the beginning of summer because the trees are lush with leaves. The terrace was renovated in 1633. The building is in the yosemune style, and the roof is made entirely of hinoki tree bark. Wings flank the west side and the east and west of the south side.                       This is probably Shimo Ofuke Garden in Ofukemaru, located in the northern part of the Honmaru and Ninomaru areas of Nagoya Castle. This garden is said to have represented a sort of fairyland or utopia, consisting of 14 islands, big and small, such as Matsubara-jima and Takefuji-jima in a huge lotus pond. In 1889, it was purchased by the Department of the Army and turned into a military drill field. In 1908, part of the Ofukemaru area became an imperial villa.
