A waterfall in Dogashima Island

This is the water fall of Shirabe. The bridge in front of the fall still exists although slightly different in shape. A man wearing yukata summer kimono is standing at the centre of the bridge. The fall became a part of the garden when the Hiramatsu villa was built around 1887 and the water from the fall flows into the pond in the garden.     Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.       Medaki waterfall at Nunobiki Falls, taken around the same time as photographs #2814 and 2827 (Medaki Waterfall of Nunobiki). The presence of the wooden bridge over the river and the teahouse and the absence of a water supply pump suggest that this was taken on the mid-Meiji Period.                   Shirabe Falls in Dogashima hot springs, and the family of Shima Shukichi assembled before the bridge in front of the falls. The child in the centre of the bridge is Issungi Sentaro, grandson of Motokichi, the elder brother of Shima Shukichi. The Shima Photo Studio was initially called Edoya in Dogashima Hot Springs.                     This is probably Shimo Ofuke Garden in Ofukemaru, located in the northern part of the Honmaru and Ninomaru areas of Nagoya Castle. This garden is said to have represented a sort of fairyland or utopia, consisting of 14 islands, big and small, such as Matsubara-jima and Takefuji-jima in a huge lotus pond. In 1889, it was purchased by the Department of the Army and turned into a military drill field. In 1908, part of the Ofukemaru area became an imperial villa.
