The city of Kofu, Yamanashi Prefecture, seen from Kofu Castle, facing south. The Western-style buildings in the foreground are part of a winery constructed in 1876 in the metal-casting foundry, part of an industrial complex established in Kofu Castle by then-governor Fujimura Shiro. Consequently, the date of the photograph is assumed to be the early Meiji Period. Visible in the background are Sone Hill and Mt. Misaka, located at the southern edge of the Kofu Basin. Mt. A building of wood and stone construction, the hotel was designed by American architect R. P. Bridgens and opened in 1873. The building next door is the Telegraph Station built in 1872. Since both were reconstructed in brick in the third decade of the Meiji Period, this photograph must have been taken prior to that time.                       This is the post town of Hakone as seen from what was once the Hakone barrier station. The buildings on the banks of Lake Ashinoko are part of the thatched roofed building complex, the honjin. The large structures with thatched roofs to the right are officially appointed inns (Honjin). Feudal lords stayed or rested here during the Sankinkoutai (A bi-annual period of madatory alternate residence in Edo for feudal lords, known as Daimyo). The mountain in the background is Mt.
