Miyako-Odori Dancing
Maiko perform the Miyako Odori dance on stage. The maiko in the front row are dancing and holding flowers, while the others in the back row are beating drums. Lanterns are hanging from the ceiling. A large audience sits on a level lower than the stage. The Miyako Odori dance was first performed at the Kyoto Exposition in 1872 as a way to attract more visitors to Kyoto after Tokyo became Japan's capital city.
