Part of a collection of official photographs from Middle and Far East, World War Two (1939-1945). Collected by Maj Gen (later Lt Gen) Sir Frank Walter Messervy. The Battle of the Admin Box took place on the Southern Front of the Burma theatre in February 1944. The 5th and 7th Indian Divisions suffered over 7900 casualties, but successfully resisted Japanese attacks for the first time in the campaign.         The south garden of the Namikawa Yasuyuki residence at Sanjo Shirakawa Bridge-agaru is viewed from inside. Mr. Namikawa and a woman with a fan are sitting together on a veranda beside the Japanese kaiyushiki garden designed by Ogawa Jihei. Another woman, possibly a maid, is standing behind the woman, holding a small basket in her left hand. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.                   These wisteria terraces were all destroyed during World War II air raids. The wisteria trees of today were planted one by one from around 1950 by the local people. The wisteria blossoms at Kameido Tenjin Shrine are said to be the best in Tokyo, and they were chosen as one of the New Best One Hundred Scenes of Tokyo.                       Statesman Okuma Shigenobu obviously liked plants because there were three greenhouses at his residence. A Tokyo magazine reported in 1907 that, There is a second greenhouse attached to the house, with one main room and two annexed rooms containing rare tropical plants. As seen in this photograph, Okuma enjoyed Japanese bonsai as well as tropical plants.
