The Ministry of Agriculture and Science sponsored an exhibition of silk cocoons, raw silk, textiles, pottery, and lacquerware from April 1, 1885. The buildings in the background are the exhibition halls. The building in front is the First Exhibition Building, and the one behind it the Second Exhibition Building. This photograph was taken in 1885 in front of the torii gate of Toshogu Shrine, looking north.       Two kimono-clad women are riding a jinrikisha (rickshaw). One of them is holding an umbrella while the other one is holding a bundle of flowers. The long haired rickshaw man in front is wearing a head towel, a hanten coat, long underwear and straw sandals. The rickshaw man in the rear is dressed in the same fashion and is pushing the cart. He is barefoot.         A rickshaw man at Gojo Slope. The fence is designed to prevent the bamboo from spreading into the road. The road is just wide enough for rickshaws to pass.           The smaller size of the cherry trees on the right indicates that this photograph was taken some time before photographs #2425 and 2651. However, the date is later than photograph #4799 by Usui Shuzaburo because the cherry trees have grown. The sign board of the Seiyoken Annex faces in a direction different from that in photograph #4799.             Chrysanthemum dolls became popular in the Somei and Sugamo districts in the latter part of the Edo Period, but this shifted to the more centrally located Dangozaka in the Meiji Period. Visitors paid an admission charge to view the various chrysanthemum exhibitions set up in buildings. In addition to chrysanthemum dolls, rows of chrysanthemum blossoms were also displayed, as in this photograph.               Cherry trees along the approach to Toshogu Shrine,Ueno

              Ueno Toshogu, the shrine to the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, was built in 1627 by Todo Takatora on the grounds of his second residence. This is a view of the Omote Sando shrine approach from the Karamon. The stone lanterns were donated by various feudal lords. The torii gate visible in the background was donated by Sakaida Tadayo, lord of Umayabashi Castle in Joshu (present-day Gunma Prefecture) in 1633. Later buried for unknown reasons, the torii was unearthed by Sakaida's grandson Sakai Tadatomo in 1734.                 The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha.                   This is the Minami-Kuruwa area of Odawara Castle, site of present-day Odawara City Museum. This photograph was taken from the front gate of Sannomaru Primary School (the old Honcho Primary School). Since the main castle's donjon is not visible, it must have been taken after November 1871 when the tower was disassembled and sold. The bridge in the foreground is Ochatsubo-bashi (the official name is Komine-bashi).                     Akasaka Mitsuke was one of the watchtowers at Edo Castle and had an outer gate. The gate, Akasaka Gomon, was destroyed in 1872, leaving only the stone wall. This photograph was taken from the site of the former gate (present-day Akasaka Mitsuke intersection). On the right is Benkei Moat and on the left Tameike (pond). The cherry trees were apparently planted in 1881.                       Benkei Bridge seen from in front of Akasaka Gomon (gate). The moat was called Benkei Moat because it was built by master carpenter Benkei Kozaemon, and the bridge received the same name when it was built over the moat. Cherry trees were reportedly planted on both banks of the moat around 1881.
