Benkei Bridge seen from in front of Akasaka Gomon (gate). The moat was called Benkei Moat because it was built by master carpenter Benkei Kozaemon, and the bridge received the same name when it was built over the moat. Cherry trees were reportedly planted on both banks of the moat around 1881.           A master carpenter from Yamaguchi-gumi poses with his apprentice. The resemblance suggests that they are father and son. If this is correct, their family name could be Kumada. The master carpenter is holding a deerstalker hat and wearing leather shoes. They may have dressed up for the photograph.               The south garden of the Namikawa Yasuyuki residence at Sanjo Shirakawa Bridge-agaru is viewed from inside. Mr. Namikawa and a woman with a fan are sitting together on a veranda beside the Japanese kaiyushiki garden designed by Ogawa Jihei.                 Shinkyo Bridge spans Daiya River at the entrance to Nikko-Sannai. The bridge is also called Jabashi (Snake Bridge), referring to the legend that the priest Shodoshonin, when founding Nikko, crossed the river by walking over two big snakes released by Shinja-Daio. The bridge in this photograph was washed away by a flood in 1902. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.
