            SHINGU, Japan - Japan's largest ''torii,'' a gateway at the entrance to a Shinto shrine, is completed in a ceremony at Kumano-Hongu Shrine in Hongu, Wakayama Prefecture, western Japan, on May 11. Some 500 people passed through the 34-meter-high, 42-meter-wide gate after the ceremony.

              This stereograph bears the caption View taken from the United States Legation, at Yedo and is said to depict Tempukuji Temple in Azabu, but this is incorrect. The temple is actually Tozenji, located in present-day Takanawa 3-chome. The Shogunate concluded a treaty pact with Great Britain (Anglo-Japanese Treaty of Commerce) in 1858, and Tozenji Temple was designated as the site of the British Legation. This was taken by Swiss Pierre Rossier at the end of the Edo Period.                   Patriotic Shrine - Paiyushan - Lushunkou (a district in the municipality of Dalian, Liaoning province, also called Lushun City or Lushun Port, formerly known as both Port Arthur and Ryojun). During the Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905), the Russians surrendered Port Arthur to the Japanese after nearly a year's siege: the Japanese expended 58,000 killed or wounded to obtain the town. This is a Japanese memorial to the victory. Date: circa 1910

The layered sedimentary rock of this island teaches us much about the origins of Matsushima Bay. Unfortunately, the arch was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1969.                       The front gate of Zojoji Temple at Shiba is visible on the far left. The Tokyo City Railway Mita-Hibiya Line opened here in June 1904, but no train tracks are visible in this photograph. The photographer, Herbert George Ponting, visited Japan once in 1896 and again in 1903. The caption on the lower right saying Copyright 1904 indicates that he took this photograph during the second visit.
