Roofed boat taken at the bank of Imado River in front of Yumei-ro where Sanya-bori (moat) merges with Sumida River. The water is too shallow to allow the boat to float, which explains why the photograph is so sharp. In the rear is Mukojima, site of Ushijima Shinto Shrine and Chomeiji Temple. Found in the collection of Uchida Kuichi preserved at Nagasaki Municipal Museum, this photograph was verified to have been taken by Uchida in 1872.     Archaeologists uncover 1st century water site in Cambodia

    SNAY VILLAGE, Cambodia - Japanese archaeologists said on Jan. 21 they have found an ancient water site (in photo) in northwest Cambodia which dates back to the first century. The archaeologists discovered sacred mounds of water or altars at the ruins in Snay village in Banteay Meanchey Province under a two-year project which began in January last year. In front are bones of a woman believed to have been a shaman.

            Going down the Hozu River

            A yakata boat descending Hozu River is seen from the northern bank. The Kyoto Railway Company tracks and a tunnel are visible on the right. People took the approximately 16km boat ride from Hozu Town in Kameoka to Togetsu Bridge in Arashiyama. The river boats that carried lumber and goods from Tanba Kameoka to Kyoto were converted to leisure boats at the end of the Meiji Period when the Kyoto Railway was established. The Kanrantei Teahouse in the Momohama Period (late 16th century) architecture style, a Designated Cultural Asset of Miyagi Prefecture, is visible in the distance, just to the left side of the island.                   View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.
