A scenery in the suburbs of Tokyo

This is the earthen bridge leading to Ichigaya Gomon (gate), which was located to the left. The main residence of the Tokugawa family of Owari was located on the hill to the left. It was destroyed in 1868, and the Military Academy was built there in 1878. Ichigaya Hachiman Shrine is on the right side of the hill, and the town of Ichigaya Hachiman is visible at the foot of the hill. Mr. Namikawa and a woman with a fan are sitting together on a veranda beside the Japanese kaiyushiki garden designed by Ogawa Jihei. Another woman, possibly a maid, is standing behind the woman, holding a small basket in her left hand. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.             Statesman Okuma Shigenobu obviously liked plants because there were three greenhouses at his residence. A Tokyo magazine reported in 1907 that, There is a second greenhouse attached to the house, with one main room and two annexed rooms containing rare tropical plants. As seen in this photograph, Okuma enjoyed Japanese bonsai as well as tropical plants.                 Okuma Shigenobu sits on a chair, posing in front of an alcove in his residence with a cane and Western shoes. He wore a prosthesis after losing his right leg in 1889, the year after he became Minister of Foreign Affairs. Kurushima Tuneyuki of the right-wing political organization Genyosha threw a bomb at him in front of the Department of Foreign Affairs. He formed the first party cabinet in 1898 after becoming prime minister.                   The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.                     The residence of Okuma Shigenobu in Totsuka Village (present day Totsuka-machi, Shinjuku Ward). The noted statesman lived in a Western-style mansion in Iida-machi (present day Kudan 1-chome) but later moved into the residence of the former lord of the Takamatsu Clan, Matsudaira Yorisato, located next to Tokyo Polytechnic School. After acquiring the house, he made some extensions and modifications and filled in the garden pond shown in photograph #4005.
