          This photo captures women picking tea leaves at a tea farm in Uji. It is reported that Uji tea started when the Emperor Gosaga visited here in the mid thirteenth century and opened Komatsu and Kohata Nishiura Tea Garden. In those days the tea for exporting purposes has increased. Consequently the tea union and the tea processing companies were established by the instruction of Kyoto Prefecture and the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. Due to the efforts, the quality improvement and production increase were made. This could have been taken by the British photographer H. G.               The women seem to be imitating a zangiri-kyogen or comic farce. The young woman in a red kimono is taking a pose with a kitchen knife in her hand.                 The half-naked woman on the left seems to be a nursemaid. Foreign visitors to Japan at the end of the Edo Period were surprised to see Japanese women going about half-naked in public. This custom apparently continued into the Meiji Period. This may be a souvenir photograph depicting the custom of Japanese nursing at the time.
