This cave, the focal point of Enoshima worship, is also called Ryukutsu, Hongu Iwaya, or Okunomiya.         An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.           The red Senbon Torii (one thousand gates) along the eastern approach to Fushimi Inari Taisha are viewed looking southeast. The approach starts at Kamigoden Hall on the east side of the shrine precincts and stretches in a southeasterly direction to the foot of Mt. Inari, Myobusha. There are many visitors. The man on the lower left may be a beggar. The marks on the torii gate indicate that this photograph was taken after February 1889, probably by British photographer H. G.               This is the head temple of the Jishu sect of Buddhism founded by Ippen. The official name of the temple is Totakusan Muryokoin Shojokoji Temple. The fourth-generation priest Donkai built the temple in 1325. This photograph captures Kyakuden (far left) and Daishoin (far right) over the Chujaku Gate viewed from around Kan'nondo on the left.                 The five-story pagoda is viewed from Toyokuni Shrine (Senjokaku, or One Thousand Mat Hall ) on Tonooka Hill on the east side of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine. Senjokaku Hall was built in 1587 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi for the monthly Buddhist rite of reading of the Senbukyo sutra. The magnificent hall was built in irimoya architectural style with a tiled roof.
