The red Grand Torii Gate of Itsukushima Shinto Shrine (Important Cultural Asset) is recognized around the world as a symbol of Japan. The current gate, the eighth built since the Heian Period, was completed in 1875. It is approximately 16m tall, and the horizontal part, called 'kasagi,' is approximately 24m long. The posts are made from camphor logs. Sailboats (with rudders showing) and sculls are visible.==Date:1904, Place:Miyajima, Photo:Underwood, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number97‐9‐0]
