A master carpenter from Yamaguchi-gumi poses with his apprentice. The resemblance suggests that they are father and son. If this is correct, their family name could be Kumada. The master carpenter is holding a deerstalker hat and wearing leather shoes. They may have dressed up for the photograph. Shippoyaki (cloisonne ware) craftsmen

Young craftsmen work on vases in the cloisonne workshop of Namikawa Yasuyuki, using small tools at individual tables. Namikawa is observing their work from behind. Many small bottles of paint and chemicals are visible on the shelves behind the glass doors in the background. This may have been taken by H. G. Workmen doing iron-pot work

Potters tend the fire in a noborigama (climbing kiln) at the Kinkozan Sobei Kiln. Three men are checking the condition of the fire. The kiln is made from bricks and clay. It was located in Sanjo-Awataguchi and specialized in Awata style pottery. Founded in 1633, it exported ceramic ornaments and utensils to North America and Europe as well as China and India. Stirring the paddy field

A farmer is cultivating the field using black-haired cow at a rice paddie in Uji. A rope and a plow are tied to the back of the cow and each time the cow pulls the plow, the rice paddie is cultivated. A big warehouse is behind and a small shack covered with mats is made temporarily next to it, and a farmer with a balance pole is carrying goods. The rice seedlings may be preserved in the shack. This photo could have been taken by the British photographer H. G. Ikegami Honmonji Temple

Honmonji Temple is the main temple of the Nichiren Sect of Japanese Buddhism, built on the site of Nichiren's death in 1288. The five-story pagoda visible in the back was constructed by the 2nd Shogun Tokugawa Hidetada in 1607. Today, it is the only pagoda in Japan conveying the Japanese-Chinese building style of the Momoyama Period and the oldest five-story pagoda in Tokyo.
