Higashi Honganji Temple

Taishi-do of Higashihonganji Temple is viewed from the southeast. There are many children around the big water fountain. The Taishi-do took 15 years to build. It was completed in 1895 according to the wishes of the head priest, Otani Kosho. Built in single-story irimoya style with a tiled roof, it is 76m wide, 56m deep, 38m high, and covers 3,800 square metres.         Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.               Balcony of the main hall of Kiyomizu Temple seen from Okuno-in, facing west-northwest. Among the sightseers there are women with parasols. It is probably the beginning of summer because the trees are lush with leaves. The terrace was renovated in 1633. The building is in the yosemune style, and the roof is made entirely of hinoki tree bark. Wings flank the west side and the east and west of the south side. Pines and firs grow in front of the palace. Oike Garden was built during the Enpo Period (1673-81). This type of garden, called kaiyushiki, had bridges, lanterns, and small pavilions to enhance enjoyment of the beauty of the garden. Otsune Palace is built in the shoin-zukuri style and was rebuilt in 1855. Inoue Mankichi Inoue of Nagasaki Prefecture bought a sub-temple called Yaami from Anyoji Temple at Maruyama in 1879, then renovated it in Western style and opened it as the Yaami Hotel. Many foreigners stayed here, but the building burned down in 1906.
