        An elderly woman prays for good luck by touching the bronze cow on a stone pedestal at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine. The statue was donated by shrine followers. The woman is wearing a hand towel on her head, holding a cane in her right hand, and touching the hind leg of the cow with her left hand. Early blooming plum trees are visible in the background. The shrine's guardian deity, the cow was regarded as a messenger of Sugawara-no-Michizane. This may have been taken by the British photographer H. G.             View of Nihonbashi River looking west, taken from Nihonbashi Bridge. The river is busy with cargo boats. Mt. Fuji was visible from this spot on clear days. The left side of the river is Nishi-gashi (west riverside), and the bridge visible in the far right is Nishi (West) Bridge. This was a transitional period when land transportation was replacing water transportation, but at this time the canal still played a major role in transporting goods.                 This is Shichishoen at Mukojima, the villa of the Hotta family, former feudal lords of the Sakura Clan. The villa was owned by the family from 1868 to 1887. Of kaiyushiki (garden with a pond and promenade style), the garden was watered by the Sumida River and changed according to the tides. It was referred to as one of the best gardens in Tokyo.                     Arashiyama (Mt. Arashi) has a height of about 380 meters. It is located on the east edge of the Tanba Highlands and has Torigamine and Yamagamine to the northwest and Mt. Matsuo to the southeast. Hozu River runs from the north to the east at the northern foot of the mountain. A bamboo grove with a brushwood fence is shown at the bank of Hozu River, with hotels in the distance. A rickshaw with a woman passenger stands in front of the grove and a man stands nearby. The left side of the road is probably a boat anchorage.                       The Golden Pavilion at Rokuon-ji Temple seen from the western edge of Kyoko Pond, facing north-northeast. The shrubbery on the right is Ashihara Island.
