When a party of Frenchmen en route to observe a transit of Venus across the sun stopped at Hong Kong on September 22, 1874, the biggest typhoon in history hit Hong Kong. They sat out the typhoon on board of their ship off shore overnight hoping that the chains of the anchor would hold. The photo shows the destroyed shore protections dockside.                 This photo has August 20, 1874 written on it. The foundry with two chimneys and the brick building with the boiler room which had started operation directly under the shogunate government in 1857 survived the typhoon. Another brick building, the lathe workshop with the first iron roof truss in Japan was not destroyed. The western-style building on the hill to the left is the dormitory for foreign staff built in April,1874.                   This is the coast street in Hong Kong in the 1860s. The huge U-shaped building in the right foreground is Dent Company which made significant profits in the opium trade. The oldest church in Hong Kong, St. John’s Cathedral, is visible in the background on the left. The first office of the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank and Jardine, Matheson & Company were also on this street. It was the center of commerce and finance in Hong Kong.                     The photo has August 20, 1874 written on it. This is a distant view of Nagasaki Port over Akunoura Ebisu Shrine. There is some damage in the shrine precinct caused by a typhoon. Many Japanese style boats are moored by the seashore. The shrine is flanked on both sides by Akunoura; Mizunoura is on the far left, and Otorisaki and Inasazaki Points are beyond that.
