The foundry with two chimneys and the brick building with the boiler room which had started operation directly under the shogunate government in 1857 survived the typhoon.     The buildings starting from the right are, Worship Hall, Norito-den Hall, and the Main Hall at Suwa Shrine. Worship Hall is where commoners would worship. The building is made of hinoki (Japanese cypress) in irimoya-zukuri style (a hip-and- gable roof construction) with a hiwadabuki-style roof (Japanese cypress hinoki bark thatching). The right, left , and front walls flip open upwards like awnings. The tablet was written by Sawa Nobuyoshi who became the Kyushu Pacification Officer in 1868. The floor of the Norito-den Hall connected to the passageway is tatami-covered. The building in the far left is the main hall rebuilt in 1869 after burning down in 1857. The former Nagasaki Bugyosho building on the left going through the gate and the newly built building on the right (the former governor’s residence) were the school buildings. In 1872 Tokyo Public Teachers College was established and thereafter teachers colleges were established across Japan. Many Japanese style boats are moored by the seashore. The shrine is flanked on both sides by Akunoura; Mizunoura is on the far left, and Otorisaki and Inasazaki Points are beyond that. The hill in the background is former Uchi-machi which used to be enclosed by stone walls. The areas with rooftops are present-day Shianbashi, Hamanomachi, and the right bank of the Nakashima River. The roof tiles fixed with mortar stand out. They were thus fixed so they would not be blown away by typhoons. The building on the right is Jinjo Chintei Elementary School, renamed Jinjo Kozone Elementary School in July 1887. The Minamiyamate area of the foreign settlement stretches from the back of the school all the way up the hillside. The neighbourhoods on the left are Furukawa and Naminohira. The buildings in the centre are the Mitsubishi Tankosha and Nagasaki Flour Mill in Kozone-machi. The two white buildings on the right hill are Yojosho (hospital) built in 1861 and the one on the left is Igakusho (medical school) attached to it. The big building on its left is Bunseki-Kyurisho where physics and chemistry were taught. They are merged and renamed as Seitokukan in 1865. This is the place where the modern medical education and hospital in Japan began and the root of Nagasaki University School of Medicine. The roof of Shokakuji temple is seen next to it. The houses on the lower right are Tojin-yashiki (Chinese residences).                       This photo captures the old site of the Nishi-Yakusho of the former Nagasaki Bugyosho office (present-day Prefectural Office) over the Zenza river taken from the old site of Daitokuji Temple. What used to be the Nishi-Yakusho is now a vacant lot. The first Prefectural Office made of wood was built in July 1874. However, the building was destroyed soon by a typhoon on August 20 of the same year. Therefore, it is presumed that this photo was probably taken around 1873 before the construction of the first Prefectural Office building. The big white building on the left is the site of the present-day main office of Eighteen Bank. The area with foliage in the center is where the old Satsuma Domain residence used to be, but the main building is gone.
