        This is a scene of the Sakurababa and Irabayashi neighbourhoods near the fork of Nakashima River and Narutaki River (present-day Nakanohashi bridge). This scenery was given the poetic name Sakuraba Seiran (cherry blossom storm) and was known as one of the eight best scenes of Nagasaki.             Nakahara Naosuke, a Samurai from Satsuma

            This is a samurai from Satsuma, Nakahara Naosuke (1832-68). After assisting in the manufacturing of steam boats and kiriko glassware at Shuseikan in Satsuma Domain, he went to Tokyo and learned the canon gunnery from Egawa Tan'an. He eventually became the head of the Egawa School. After returning to Satsuma, he helped the navy to build canons. Unfortunately, he was killed in Nagaoka during the Boshin War. It is reported that he would have become a man of exceptional talent like Saigo or Okubo if he had lived.               Main Hall and Worship Hall at Suwa Shrine

              The buildings starting from the right are, Worship Hall, Norito-den Hall, and the Main Hall at Suwa Shrine. Worship Hall is where commoners would worship. The building is made of hinoki (Japanese cypress) in irimoya-zukuri style (a hip-and- gable roof construction) with a hiwadabuki-style roof (Japanese cypress hinoki bark thatching). The right, left , and front walls flip open upwards like awnings. The tablet was written by Sawa Nobuyoshi who became the Kyushu Pacification Officer in 1868. The floor of the Norito-den Hall connected to the passageway is tatami-covered. The building in the far left is the main hall rebuilt in 1869 after burning down in 1857.                 This is a view of Togitsu Village in Nishisonogi County adjacent to Omura Bay and Togitsu Harbour. The heavily populated Urago district is in the foreground, while on the opposite shore is the beach line of Sakino and its houses. This harbour was often used by people travelling to and from Omura. The hilly area in the background includes the villages of Okago and Urerigo. The tall mountain in the background is Mt.                   This photo was taken some time during the period spanning the Bakumatsu - end of Meiji Period. Koshima Yojosho is standing in the middle of the photo. A hospital called Koshima Yojosho was built in May 1860 at Sako, Koshima-go, to treat commoners. In 1861, a medical school was built adjacent to the hospital.                       Hotarujaya and Ichinose-bashi Bridge

                      Ichinose bridge and Hotarujaya. This area, called Ichinose, was famous for its fireflies ( hotaru ) and was counted among the eight best scenes of Nagasaki. Hotarujaya (teahouse) was situated at the entrance to Nagasaki and served as a place to bid farewell to travellers leaving the city. Ichinose Bridge was built through private funding by the Chinese interpreter Chen Dao-Long.
