Soldiers and Women Relaxing at Oei’s Hotel

Russian soldiers relax with Japanese women in the garden of the Hotel Vesna. After Putyatin and his squadron of four Russian ships landed here in 1853, the Inasa area was used frequently by Russian visitors. This hotel was opened in November 1893, and the commander and staff of the Russian Far East Fleet participated in the ceremony.             Nakahara Naosuke, a Samurai from Satsuma

            This is a samurai from Satsuma, Nakahara Naosuke (1832-68). After assisting in the manufacturing of steam boats and kiriko glassware at Shuseikan in Satsuma Domain, he went to Tokyo and learned the canon gunnery from Egawa Tan'an. He eventually became the head of the Egawa School. After returning to Satsuma, he helped the navy to build canons. Unfortunately, he was killed in Nagaoka during the Boshin War. It is reported that he would have become a man of exceptional talent like Saigo or Okubo if he had lived.               This is a view of Togitsu Village in Nishisonogi County adjacent to Omura Bay and Togitsu Harbour. The heavily populated Urago district is in the foreground, while on the opposite shore is the beach line of Sakino and its houses. This harbour was often used by people travelling to and from Omura. The hilly area in the background includes the villages of Okago and Urerigo. The tall mountain in the background is Mt.                   Ichinose bridge and Hotarujaya. This area, called Ichinose, was famous for its fireflies ( hotaru ) and was counted among the eight best scenes of Nagasaki. Hotarujaya (teahouse) was situated at the entrance to Nagasaki and served as a place to bid farewell to travellers leaving the city. Ichinose Bridge was built through private funding by the Chinese interpreter Chen Dao-Long.                     This is a Shingon Sect temple established by Kukai (Kobo Taishi) in 824. The sanmon and main hall are in the foreground and background, respectively. The large tree on the left is the upside-down gingko, which is still the largest gingko tree in Tokyo. This spot became the site of the American Legation after the effectuation of the Japan-U.S. Commercial Treaty in June 1859. Townsend Harris was the first envoy. The Legation moved to Tsukiji Akashi-machi in 1875. This photograph was taken in 1863 by Felix Beato, soon after Harris' arrival in Japan.                       Nagasaki Kiyomizudera Temple

                      This is a distant view of Kiyomizu Temple, said to have been founded by the priest Keijun who came to Nagasaki with a Buddhist statue in 1623. Historical documents state that the Kawarado (tiled temple building) in the centre, which was modeled after Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto with stone handrails surrounding it, was donated by Matsukura Shigemasa, lord of Shimabara Castle. The main temple building was added by Chinese resident He Gaocai in 1668. It is rather uncommon to use an arched doorway other than in the front hallway.
