This panoramic photograph of central Nagasaki was taken from Mt. Kazagashira. This is the first of three panels (#5615-5617) showing the area from the elevation of Umegasaki, Nagasaki Prefecture Office and Nagasaki City Hall to the then high school (now Sakura-machi Primary School) and all the way to Suwa Shinto Shrine. The date is after 1893, because the re-routing of Nakashima River has been completed. This second panel depicts (from the left) the Court of Appeals, Nagasaki Commercial High School and Nagasaki City Hall.         Northeastern view of the snow-capped peak of Mt. Fuji, taken from the bank of Fuji River in Iwabuchi, Fujikawa-machi. The mountain on the left is Mt. Iwamoto, and the tree line reaches to the forest of Matsuoka Sui Shinto Shrine (Fuji City) on the left. Two men are at the riverside, and Fujigawa Bridge, which crosses from the south of the shrine to Iwabuchi, is visible. This bridge was washed away many times from the beginning of the Meiji Period.             This is a view from the cemetery at Fukusaiji Temple looking over central Nagasaki and the waterfront area from Daikoku-machi to Dejima. The re-routing of Nakashima River had not been completed at this time, so the date is between 1877 and 1887. Also, the construction of the new Urakami Road along the waterfront from Dejima to Goto-machi has not been completed yet. A cannon platform is visible near the edge of the pine tree.               Koshima Hospital and the city of Nagasaki

              This photo was taken some time during the period spanning the Bakumatsu - end of Meiji Period. Koshima Yojosho is standing in the middle of the photo. A hospital called Koshima Yojosho was built in May 1860 at Sako, Koshima-go, to treat commoners. In 1861, a medical school was built adjacent to the hospital. Pompe van Meerdervoort taught internal medicine and surgery there. The Chinese settlement was in the area of slightly lower elevation on the lower left.==Date:About 1865, Place:Nagasaki, Photo:F.                     Dejima Island is viewed from the hill of Umegasaki. The buildings in the foreground are, from left, the newly built (1884) Nagasaki Post Office, Great Northern Telegraph Co. (No.2 Umegasaki), and the Nagasaki branch office of Yokohama Specie Bank (later Nippon Yusen Kaisha). The re-routing of Nakashima River has been completed by this time. The bridge on the right is the first-generation Dejima Bridge, and the Dejima Protestant Seminary is to the left of the bridge. Behind Dejima is the second-generation Nagasaki Prefecture Office building erected in 1876.                       View of Koji-machi and Hanzo-mon from the west side of Soto Sakurada-mon. The area where the Imperial Palace (former Edo Castle) faces the inner moat (Sakurada Moat) is called Hachimaki Doi. The stone wall was constructed only on the upper portion, and the rest was a gently curving earthen embankment. Old pines still remain inside the stone walls, and this is one of the most beautiful spots in Tokyo. The Watari watchtower of Hanzo-mon, which was removed in 1871, is visible, indicating that this photograph was taken at the beginning of the Meiji Period.
