The far left side of the street is a paved rickshaw lane. The street on the right is paved with stones and a rickshaw, a typical mode of transportation, is parked.         View of Kobe harbour from Mt. Suwa. Mid-Meiji Period. This is the same as photograph #4871, although the tinting of the buildings is different. The Kodera family residence is visible, surrounded by walls on the right of the main street running north-south. The area beyond the residence and to the left (east) is the present-day hub of the Hyogo Prefecture administration and site of both the Prefecture Office and Prefecture Police Headquarters.                 Downstream area of Oura River

                This photo is taken halfway up the Oura River looking downstream. The street light was particular to the foreign settlement. The bridge downstream is Benten Bridge and the mountain on the other side of Nagasaki Port is Mt. Inasa. A boat called ‘sanpan’, used to fetch goods from the ships offshore, is moored. The area, ‘Sagarimatsu’, was named after the pine tree on the left. The roof of Myogyoji Temple is barely discernable.                   The Great Buddha at Daibutsuyama, Ueno Shinobazugaoka. The lack of temple housing indicates that the photograph was taken after 1873, probably around 1882 in view of the fact that the photographer is Usui Shuzaburo. The path in front of the Buddha to the left leads to Ueno Seiyoken Restaurant, which opened in April 1873 as the second location of Tsukiji Seiyoken of Kyobashi Unemecho. A sign saying Seiyoken Annex is visible to the left of the path. The street in the foreground is Kuromon Dori (Black Gate Street).                       The hill on the left is Ujinoyama, the area from present-day Nakayamate Dori 6- and 7-chome to Yamamoto Dori 5-chome in Chuo Ward, probably taken sometime in the first half of the Meiji Period. Although part of a mixed-residence area outside the foreign settlement, this section to the west contained some Western-style buildings.
