Nakahara Naosuke, a Samurai from Satsuma

This is a samurai from Satsuma, Nakahara Naosuke (1832-68). After assisting in the manufacturing of steam boats and kiriko glassware at Shuseikan in Satsuma Domain, he went to Tokyo and learned the canon gunnery from Egawa Tan'an. He eventually became the head of the Egawa School. After returning to Satsuma, he helped the navy to build canons. Unfortunately, he was killed in Nagaoka during the Boshin War. It is reported that he would have become a man of exceptional talent like Saigo or Okubo if he had lived.         This is a scene of the Sakurababa and Irabayashi neighbourhoods near the fork of Nakashima River and Narutaki River (present-day Nakanohashi bridge). This scenery was given the poetic name Sakuraba Seiran (cherry blossom storm) and was known as one of the eight best scenes of Nagasaki.                   Hoko-ji temple was established by Hideyoshi Toyotomi (Shogun) in Higashiyama-ku,Kyoto-city and was imitated Nara Todai-ji Daibutsu-den. There was a great statue of Buddha, 20 meters in height, several earthquakes and thunderbolts had wreaked havoc on it. And also Daibutsu-den (the Hall of\r\nthe Great Buddha) had lost by fire in 1973. There is the Bonsho (a buddhist temple bell) inscribed Kokka Anko (May the State be peaceful and prosperous) and Kunshin Horaku (May the lord and\r\nvassal be rich and delight) in the precincts.                     This is a view of Togitsu Village in Nishisonogi County adjacent to Omura Bay and Togitsu Harbour. The heavily populated Urago district is in the foreground, while on the opposite shore is the beach line of Sakino and its houses. This harbour was often used by people travelling to and from Omura.                       This photo was taken some time during the period spanning the Bakumatsu - end of Meiji Period. Koshima Yojosho is standing in the middle of the photo. A hospital called Koshima Yojosho was built in May 1860 at Sako, Koshima-go, to treat commoners. In 1861, a medical school was built adjacent to the hospital.
