Fixing disaster-hit Shinto shrine before New Year
SENDAI, Japan - Volunteer workers on Dec. 21, 2011, clean and repair the surroundings of the Koganeyama Shrine, a Shinto shrine on an island off the Oshika Peninsula, Miyagi Prefecture hit by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami as well as by a typhoon, prior to the New Year. Many people in Japan customarily visit Shinto shrines on New Year's Day. (Kyodo)
