Southern Sudan to gain independence
JUBA, Sudan - People holding the flag of the Southern Sudan authority celebrate in Juba on Jan. 30, 2011. A referendum commission announced later the same day that over 99 percent of voters in Southern Sudan had voted for secession from the north, ensuring that the oil-rich region will become Africa's 54th state as early as in July after decades of civil war.
