Japan - Yokohama - The Grand Pier

Japan - Yokohama - The Grand Pier. The HMS Rawalpindi (left) was a British armed merchant cruiser (a converted passenger ship - as it was at the time of this photograph - as the P&O vessel the SS Rawalpindi) that was sunk in a surface action against the German battleships Scharnhorst and Gneisenau during the first months of Second World War. On the right is the Hikawa Maru - a Japanese ocean liner that was built for the Nippon Yusen KK line by the Yokohama Dock Company. She was launched on 30 September 1929, and made her maiden voyage from Kobe to Seattle on 13 May 1930. Date: circa 1931

South Manchurian Railway Company Hospital - Shenyang (formerly Mukden), China. With the region under Japanese control following victory in the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5), Japanese settlers were encouraged through the construction of schools, libraries, hospitals and public utilities. The South Manchuria Railway Company (Mantetsu) - was a company founded in the Empire of Japan in 1906, taken over after the Russo-Japanese War, and operated within China in the Japanese-controlled South Manchuria Railway Zone. The railway itself ran from Lushun Port (Port Arthur) at the southern tip of the Liaodong Peninsula to Harbin, where it connected to the Chinese Eastern Railway. Date: circa 1920s

During the Russo-Japanese war (1904-1905), the Russians surrendered Port Arthur to the Japanese after nearly a year's siege: the Japanese expended 58,000 killed or wounded to obtain the town. Russian Admiral Eugene Alexeyeff was blamed for splitting precious resources shipped 5,000 miles across the single tracked Trans-Siberian Railway and Manchurian Railway between Dalny and Port Arthur (pictured here). China - Dalian City

Dalian, China. The settlement was occupied by the British in 1858, returned to the Chinese in the 1880s, and then occupied by Japan in 1895 during the first Sino-Japanese War. With the unconditional surrender of Japan at the end of the Second World War, Dalian, passed to the Soviet Union, who had liberated the city in advance of the end of hostilities and governed the city until 1950, when the city was presented to the Chinese Communist government without any compensation.
